Discovering the Magic of Guatemala: Antigua and Lake Atitlan
The Challenges & Opportunities of Standby
This trip on standby was all about being affordable and close by. Central America is known to be easy on the wallet, and we could get there in just a few hours. Two of us flew standby directly from Newark to Guatemala City, which is always better when flying standby—fewer flights mean a better chance of getting on!
Caroline was supposed to fly from Pittsburgh to Houston and then on to Guatemala City. But the weather had other plans. Huge storms in Houston caused her flight to be canceled, messing up our whole “standby adventure.” With everyone scrambling to get new flights to Houston, we ended up buying her a seat for the next day.
This just shows how unpredictable standby can be, as our dad always says, “Standby means you stand and wave bye to the plane.” After two days, Caroline finally made it to Antigua, just in time for us to take an Uber to Lake Atitlan. Despite all the hiccups, she made it!
Antigua: A Step Back in Time
My recent trip to Guatemala was nothing short of enchanting, with Antigua being the first stop. This city, known for its well-preserved Spanish Baroque-influenced architecture and cobblestone streets, offered a glimpse into the past while buzzing with vibrant modern life. For two nights, we stayed at the charming Hotel Aurora, which perfectly embodies the colonial elegance of Antigua. The hotel’s lush courtyard and historical charm provided a serene retreat from the bustling streets.
Riding the chicken buses around Antigua, Guatemala is an experience like no other. These vividly painted, retrofitted American school buses buzz with energy, packed with locals and travelers alike, winding through the lush countryside and charming cobblestone streets. It’s an affordable and lively way to see the area, offering a taste of everyday Guatemalan life with a dash of adventure.
Culinary Adventures in Antigua
Antigua is a haven for food lovers, and I had the pleasure of dining at some truly unique establishments. One standout was Por Que No?, a quirky and cozy café that captured my heart. The eclectic décor and intimate atmosphere made it a perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely meal. The menu, filled with creative dishes made from fresh local ingredients, did not disappoint. Each bite was a testament to the culinary creativity that thrives in Antigua.
One of our best experiences in Antigua was Adra Hostel rooftop. The views are incredible—you can see Antigua’s famous volcanoes and the beautiful old buildings all around. It’s the perfect spot to chill out, and enjoy a yummy mango margarita like we did! The rooftop at Adra Hostel really adds something special to your stay, making it easy to relax and soak in the beauty of the city.
The Lake Como of Guatemala – Lake Atitlan
After exploring Antigua, I headed to the stunning Lake Atitlan. Surrounded by majestic volcanoes and traditional Mayan villages, the lake is often referred to as one of the most beautiful in the world. My accommodation at Jenna’s River Bed & Breakfast in Panajachel was an idyllic base for exploring the area. This charming B&B offered breathtaking views of the lake and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
Relaxation at Casa Del Mundo
One of the highlights of my time at Lake Atitlan was a day spent at Casa Del Mundo in Jaibalito. Known as the “most magical hotel on the lake,” Casa Del Mundo lives up to its reputation. Perched on a cliff with panoramic views of the lake, it provided the perfect setting for a day of relaxation. I lounged on the terrace, took in the stunning vistas, and enjoyed the tranquility that this hidden gem offers. The sense of peace and the beauty of the surroundings made it an unforgettable experience.
Reflections on Guatemala
My journey through Guatemala, from the historic charm of Antigua to the serene beauty of Lake Atitlan, was a tapestry of unforgettable experiences. The country’s rich culture, warm hospitality, and breathtaking landscapes have left an indelible mark on my heart. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a food lover, or someone seeking tranquility amidst nature, Guatemala offers something for everyone. If you’re planning your next adventure, consider adding this beautiful country to your itinerary – it’s a decision you won’t regret.
Best times for the best views?
Lake Atitlán is renowned for its stunning Instagram-worthy views, but during the warmer months, visibility can be a real challenge due to frequent haze and low clouds. If you’re hoping to capture those picture-perfect shots of the volcanoes and crystal-clear waters, I’d recommend planning your visit in the winter when the air is crisper and the vistas are breathtakingly clear. Trust me, the extra planning is worth it for those uninterrupted panoramic views!
